Según el más reciente estudio realizado sobre el tema (año 2014, ver referencias más abajo), el río Amazonas nace en Huancayo (Perú), concretamente en el Cordillera Rumi Cruz (10.7320°S, 76.6480°W; altura: 5220 m).
